Previous volumes in The Norton Library History of England series:Read's book The Tudors is not officially a member of The Norton Library History of England series. But the series has a gap for the years 1485-1603. The lists of books in the series variously announce "Forthcoming" volumes to include M.E. James, The Tudor Age, 1485-1603 (this appears in my copy of Holmes) and Margaret Bowker, The Tudor Age, 1485-1603 (this appears in my copy of Read). However, neither of those books were ever published, as far as I can discover. Read's book somewhat fills that gap and was published by Norton during the 1960s during the same period as the official books of the series. Read's book is not so detailed or scholarly as the other books in the series, so perhaps one should turn to other texts for a more rigorous introduction to the Tudor period. Elton's book on the Tudors first appeared in 1955; perhaps its success discouraged the publication of another textbook on the topic for a generation.I suspect that one's time might be better spent with Elton, Guy or Brigden instead of with Read's The Tudors.
