The book was initially written during the period 1880-1884, first published in 1889 and 1890, and revised through January 1899. The Library of America edition contains the texts of the final revised editions of History of the United States of America during the First Administration of Thomas Jefferson and History of the United States of America during the Second Administration of Thomas Jefferson published in 4 volumes by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1903.]
